Mayor Darrell Steinberg joined The Carmichael Dave Show on Monday to give updates on the MLS bid and much more

According to Mayor Darrell Steinberg, the city of Sacramento is still very much alive in the hunt for a Major League Soccer expansion team.

Just over one month removed from the devastating news that lead investor Ron Burkle had backed out from becoming the majority owner of Sacramento’s MLS expansion team, Mayor Steinberg is making it clear that the ownership group is determined to find a new lead investor.

The 56th mayor of Sacramento told Dave and JayMarzz during Monday’s edition of The Carmichael Dave Show that the city remains in discussions with the MLS–while also stating that the city could be in better shape to acquire a franchise than it was two years ago.

“My message today is that we are still very much in the hunt for Major League Soccer,” Steinberg said.

“In fact, in some ways, we’re in better shape than we were two years ago. Obviously, we still need the major investor after the last investor backed out after 18 months. But all of the work that we have done in terms of finding a city contribution, the environmental work for the stadium, all of the preparation we get to take advantage of.”

Steinberg went on to further elaborate, citing that the city has–and will continue–to meet all of the criteria needed to be awarded an MLS franchise.

“We have everything. We have the fanbase. We’ve got the stadium plan. We have the public contribution. We need the investor and we will find the investor…I’m still confident that we are going to have Major League Soccer in Sacramento.”

Throughout the interview with Mayor Steinberg, the topics of the MLS expansion team, Sacramento Republic FC and the possibility of bringing Major League Baseball to Sacramento and much more are discussed.
