The Sacramento Kings have announced that center Richaun Holmes will miss the remainder of the 2021-22 season due to personal reasons.

Holmes, who is in the first year of a four-year contract with the Kings, has dealt with several eye injuries this season, missing a total of 26 games this season due to injury or personal reasons.

“Richaun is a core member of our team, who is very important to our success,” Kings general manager Monte McNair said in the release. “We fully support Rich and look forward to seeing him back on the court for the 2022-23 NBA season.”

“I would like to thank everyone for their support during these difficult times,” Holmes said through a team-issued statement. “I love this team, I love my teammates and I look forward to returning next year.”

Over 45 games this season, the 28-year-old has averaged 10.4 points (.660 FG%, .778 FT%), 7.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 23.9 minutes per game.

Since the Kings completed a deal to acquire two-time All-Star center Domantas Sabonis, questions surrounding Holmes’ future had begun to surface as rumors surfaced that Sacramento was looking to find center a new home during the hours leading up to the trade deadline.

Holmes has not looked like himself since suffering his first eye injury back on November 22nd. Up until that injury, the veteran center was averaging 14.4 points, 9.8 rebounds, and one block per game on almost 70-percent shooting from the field.

Since the injury, Holmes has averaged 7.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game over 27 appearances.

It’s clear that the center is not comfortable in a bench role after finding success in the Sacramento starting lineup over the past three seasons, as Holmes is averaging 3.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per game (15.4 minutes) over his past eight appearances.
