Day 2 of San Francisco 49ers’ minicamp has wrapped up as we enter the final day of the first mandatory workouts of the 2022 NFL season. One of the biggest questions looming this offseason was the development of former No. 3 overall draft pick Trey Lance with the organization looking to move on from veteran signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo this season. So far, Lance seems to be stepping up to the challenge.

The former North Dakota State quarterback has impressed at minicamp this week as reporters have tracked his scrimmage throws over the two days, noting the increased accuracy through the air.

Lance seems to have improved the most in the deep ball department, launching two would-be touchdowns in 7 on 7s Wednesday, according to reports.

The development of Lance’s mechanics doesn’t come as a surprise to many in the building, including All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, telling reporters Tuesday that the young QB hasn’t been “rattled” by much since joining the team.

“Seeing him in the locker room now, I don’t really see a difference,” Williams said, via Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group. “He carries himself extremely well, which is why he’s here, why everyone is so high on him. We all know his attributes as a quarterback. But I think the way he carries himself, the way he holds his head, the way nothing ever rattles him, that’s his key feature and I think that will carry him a long way.”

The 49ers look to be going all in on the future with Lance under center after excusing Garoppolo from minicamp this week while he rehabs his surgically-repaired shoulder in southern California. The team also hired former Denver Broncos QB Brian Griese to work closely with the North Dakota State product as the quarterbacks coach in late May, and the early results have been promising to say the least.

“Defending him has been tough. He’s putting the ball on the money. The accuracy is there. The deep ball is there. I’m excited for Trey. He’s setting himself up to have a really good season for us,” 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans said Wednesday.

We’ll have to see what he does on the final day of minicamp Thursday, but the 49ers faithful should feel a bit more optimistic about their chances of a good season in 2022 with their young star QB taking the reins.
