The 49ers are a little banged up after four weeks, with starting cornerback Charvarius Ward the latest to be added to the injury report.
San Francisco’s No.1 cover man was held out of practice Wednesday, according to coach Kyle Shanahan. Ward is dealing with a heel ailment that has lingered since last month. The veteran CB has not missed any time due to the injury, but his exclusion on Wednesday is definitely worth monitoring this week.
Signing a three-year deal during 2022 free agency, Charvarius Ward has been the 49ers’ lockdown corner, a vital part of the team’s ability to tackle in the open field. Through four games this season, the Middle Tennessee State alum has 19 combined tackles, four pass breakups and one interception.
Aside from Ward, the 49ers were also without linebacker Dre Greenlaw (ankle), running back Elijah Mitchell (knee) and offensive lineman Jon Feliciano (concussion) Wednesday. The first two players are expected to be back on the field in Week 5, while the latter’s status is much more up in the air.
#49ers expected participation report for today:
— Nick Wagoner (@nwagoner) October 4, 2023
DNP: OL Jon Feliciano (concussion), Elijah Mitchell (knee), LB Dre Greenlaw (ankle), CB Charvarius Ward (heel)
Limited: WR Jauan Jennings (shin), WR Deebo Samuel (knee)
Vet days for LT Trent Williams and RB Christian McCaffrey
San Francisco also had wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings (shin) practice in limited fashion to start the week. Jennings missed Week 4 with the injury. Veteran rest days were also issued to left tackle Trent Williams and running back Christian McCaffrey on Wednesday.
The 49ers have been very good on the defensive side of the football, allowing less than 20 points in three of four games so far. Despite that, both the defense and Shanahan believe they could be even better, but that he is happy with his team nonetheless.
“I think we’ve had some weak moments, but they’re still playing really good football. I’m happy with them,” Shanahan stated.
