It seemed ever more likely as the week progressed but now it’s official: Dre Greenlaw will not play Week 6 versus the Cleveland Browns.
The San Francisco 49ers linebacker has been ruled out of Sunday’s clash due to a hamstring injury. After being listed as a resting player Wednesday, Greenlaw’s absence from practice the rest of the week was concerning. Despite that, the coaching staff still felt confident that he could give it a go without any on-field preparation, listing hime as questionable Friday.
But in the end, that was not the case, now set to miss his first game of the 2023 NFL season.
“Yeah, it was during our walk-through. Just did something, didn’t feel comfortable with it, and now we’re being safe…” coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday about Dre Greenlaw.
Linebackers Oren Burks and Curtis Robinson will fill in for the starter against the Browns, with defensive captain Fred Warner beside them.
The injury report had some good news however, as running back Elijah Mitchell will return to action for the first time since Week 3. Mitchell has been in-and-out of the lineup with a knee injury this season, also missing most of the 2022 regular season with similar injuries. He will look to compliment RB Christian McCaffrey Sunday, having a good week of practice leading up.
“Good. He had a full speed practice yesterday and was full-go today. So, he’s had a good week,” Shanahan stated.
Additionally, defensive end Randy Gregory will make his debut for the 49ers in Week 6. Gregory, 31, was acquired from the Denver Broncos late last week, looking to further solidify the Red & Gold’s defensive front.
