The 49ers have had growing injury woes the past few weeks, now adding Kalia Davis to the long-term aisle of injury shelves in Santa Clara.
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announced Monday that the third-year defensive tackle suffered a knee injury during Saturday’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans. The injury will require surgery, putting Davis on ice for at least half fo the 2024 season. While specifics are sparse at this time, Shanahan did share that the injury is somewhere behind the kneecap.
Kalia Davis, 25, was sixth round draft pick during the 2022 NFL Draft. The UCF product redshirted his rookie season due to a torn ACL suffered in college, working is way back to full strength the entire 2022 season. He made his NFL debut in 2023, playing three contests in the regular season. Davis secured his first sack in the NFL against the Philadelphia Eagles Week 13.
The explosive DT has had a promising 2024 thus far, showing up on the field against the Titans Saturday. Davis racked up one sack and two tackles for loss in a strong preseason performance. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to make it through the contest, now scheduled for another knee surgery.
“[Saturday] was one of his best games. It was really unfortunate. Played awesome the whole game, why we were surprised he had such an unfortunate injury,” Kyle Shanahan said about Davis Monday.

Despite being destined for the injured reserve, the 49ers expect Kalia Davis to return at some point this season, potentially for a lengthy playoff journey.
“We plan on Kalia being around here, and we plan on him coming back and helping us this year,” Shanahan stated.
Davis wasn’t the only injury news to announce, with the 49ers coach sharing that both offensive lineman Jon Feliciano and cornerback Isaac Yiadom are banged up. The former has knee soreness, while the latter rolled his ankle in a walkthrough last week. Both men are expected to miss at least one more week fo the preseason.
In lighter injury news, Shanahan stated that safety Talanoa Hufanga will meet with doctors this week to discuss his progress from ACL surgery. If doctors clear him, Hufanga could retunr to the practice field sooner rather than later.
