The San Francisco 49ers begin their Super Bowl LVIII preparation without one of their star players, as George Kittle is set to miss practice Thursday with a toe injury.

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan revealed the news before practice Thursday. Kittle sustained the injury in the NFC Championship game against the Detroit Lions. While the ailment didn’t hamper him in the contest, it bothered him after the fact, leading to his name being included on the injury report from Sunday.

Now a few days removed, George Kittle remains on the injury report, as the 49ers look to be cautious with their star tight end before next week.

“It’s just a toe [injury],” Shanahan said about Kittle’s injury Thursday.

While the 49ers’ coach didn’t specify further on the injury, he seemed optimistic that it would have no impact on the player playing in Super Bowl LVIII.

Only two other names joined Kittle on the injury report. Cornerback Ambry Thomas has an ankle injury, while linebacker Oren Burks has a shoulder issue. Both players will be limited participants on Thursday.

George Kittle, 30, has been a vital member of the Red & Gold’s offense since he was drafted in 2017. Making his second All-Pro team this season, the Iowa alum amassed 1,000 receiving yards for the third time in his career in 2023. He also added six touchdowns on 65 catches spanning 16 contests in the regular season.

While the player is expected to be a full go by the start of practice next week, his status is worth monitoring for the time being.

Key dates for George Kittle and the San Francisco 49ers

  • Sunday, Feb. 11th – Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas
  • Tuesday, Feb. 20th – Teams can begin franchising players until Tuesday, March 5th
  • Tuesday, Feb. 27 – NFL Combine begins
