Not an ideal start to the relationship for rookie kicker Jake Moody and the 49ers, suffering another setback this week.
Reports surfaced Friday morning that the rookie suffered a strain to his right quadricep during practice this week, rendering him unavailable to suit for the 49ers’ third preseason game of 2023. The news was later confirmed via team announcement.
Moody’s absence Friday will allow fellow K Zane Gonzalez the opportunity to make a better case for the 53-man roster, with both men battling it out the last few months. While the 49ers will likely remain committed to Moody heading into the regular season, anything is possible if the veteran continues to shine.

“Yeah, I would. Yeah,” coach Kyle Shanahan said about getting both kickers some games time in the preseason. “Zane’s looked too good to not give him a chance. That was the plan last week too when we were going to have Moody go one and then Zane come in the next. But when he missed that, I wanted to give him another chance.”
That plan did not come to fruition in the team’s second preseason against the Denver Broncos, with Moody playing the entire night.
Drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Michigan alum has had some inconsistency issues in the preseason, going 0/2 on field-goal tries against the Las Vegas Raiders. Jake Moody bounced back against Denver, hitting three FGs, including the game-winner from 32 yards away. However, he missed a PAT attempt last Saturday as well.
While Moody’s absence should remain a one-off Friday, anything can happen in the land of the 49ers.
