Update: San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan gave an update on both George Kittle and Charvarius Ward injury status Thursday. Speaking to KNBR’s Tolbert & Copes, the 49ers’ play-caller said both men are in danger of missing Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams, but will wait until Friday’s practice for more clarification.

“They possibly could. They will end up being questionable I’m sure. They had good practices yesterday then complained of some soreness after, then came in this morning with it. So we weren’t going to put them out there today,” Shanahan said. “Hopefully they come in tomorrow and can get some work in. Definitely hoping those guys can be available on Sunday but, if not, gotta go to the next guys up.”

The 49ers will hold their final practice of the week Friday at 12:30 PM PST.

Original Story:

You can add two more names to the injury list for the 49ers, with George Kittle and Charvarius Ward being the culprits.

The San Francisco 49ers’ starters were absent from Thursday’s practice during the media portion. Both men are dealing with minor ailments that have only recently popped up, practicing in full the day prior. Kittle has hamstring tightness entering Week 3. Meanwhile, Ward is also dealing with a hamstring issue to go along with knee troubles.

Both men’s status are in question for Week 3’s trip to the Los Angeles Rams, with Kittle being the player more in doubt.

George Kittle, 30, is also a staple in the NFL community, both for his on-field performance and off-the-field personality. The People’s Tight End has rebounded from an injury-laden 2020 season to only miss seven contests combined since. In 2023, the University of Iowa alum had his second All-Pro season of his NFL career, recording 1,020 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 65 catches. He is a two-time All-Pro and a five-time Pro Bowler.

Charvarius Ward, 28, is in Year 3 with the 49ers, signing a three-year, $39 million deal in 2022. He has been a staple for the secondary, making his first Pro-Bowl selection in 2023. The Mississippi native has played in 109 career games, racking up ten interceptions, 462 combined tackles and 78 pass break-ups in seven seasons.

Both Kittle and Ward add to the 49ers growing injury concerns. Offensive superstars Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey are also sidelined due to injury, with CMC’s being the worst of all.

On a positive note, safety Talanoa Hufanga made his second practice of the week Thursday. He is likely to make his 2024 season debut this Sunday, 10 month after tearing his ACL.
