The 49ers have one of the most talented running back rooms inn the NFL, spearheaded by Christian McCaffrey. But it goes beyond just talent for CMC, according to Kyle Juszczyk, it’s about preparation, eager as ever to be on the field with his teammates.
The San Francisco fullback provide an update on his teammate’s status midway through the preseason. McCaffrey suffered a calf strain prior to the Tennessee Titans game, sidelining him for the rest of the preseasons out of precaution. While CMC has not practiced since, he was seen doing work on the sideline Thursday, suggesting a return to practice is forthcoming.
And according to his 49ers counterpart, McCaffrey is letting the room know it.
“It really is never enough for him,” Kyle Juszczyk said regarding McCaffrey Thursday. And you can see it’s killing him not to be out there. He’s always chomping at the bit. He makes sure to he reminds me every day he’s getting a little bit closer, he’s gonna have those cleats on the grass in no time.”

McCaffrey, 28, has been an offensive juggernaut since joining the 49ers midway through the 2022 season. The Colorado native has amassed nearly 4,000 scrimmage yards and 39 touchdowns (regular season and playoffs) in 33 total games played in Red & Gold. He has also thrown for a score as well, making him the complete package for Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
Another big presence missing from the 49ers right now is Trent Williams. The left tackle is currently holding out, waiting for a revised contract in line with market value for his position. Williams has three years remaining on his current deal, but nom guaranteed money. Obviously, that needs to change and will before the regular season begins.
But until he reappears in Santa Clara, the offense misses one of their leaders.
“Trent’s an incredible leader. You know, he’s got this aura around him that, obviously, we all think so highly of them, and he’s so talented, people seem to gravitate to him,” Juszczyk said about Williams. “So when he’s around it just builds a camaraderie. It definitely pushes other offensive linemen to meet that standard. But I really am confident that he’ll be here soon, and I think we’ll get things figured out.”

While reports have indicated no “significant movement” has been made on a new contract, all sides remain optimistic that it will be sorted out in due time.
“We’re having a lot of discussions with his agent. Hopefully we can figure it out, I’m optimistic we will, of course the sooner the better,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said on KNBR’s Tolbert & Copes Thursday.
