Despite ongoing efforts to get the achilles injury of Christian McCaffrey in check, it appears worse than intially realized.
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Monday that the star running back has bilateral achilles tendinitis. That means that McCaffrey has inflammation in both legs, as opposed to the singular issue he was dealing with last season.
While tests have determined that he will not need surgery at this time, nor that he has suffered another setback, the 49ers’ approach will be wait-and-see for the next month or so. CMC has been dealing with the issue for some time, but the achilles problems have primarily been in one leg.
NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco mentioned it on his podcast 49ers’ Talk after Week 4, with the team’s coach confirming thereafter.

49ers general manager John Lynch had mentioned that the injury was more significant than initially thought, hence the trip overseas to Germany for treatment.
“We needed to quiet it down. The plan was to give it the time to do that and then at some point in a thoughtful way to ramp him back up,” Lynch said on KNBR last Friday. “What he does and where he goes, he’s got people who work on his body and have for a long time… Now he’s back here and we’ll have to hit certain markers and try the ramp up. God willing, the thing has quieted down and we can build him up in a smart thoughtful way.”
Christian McCaffrey, 28, has been an offensive juggernaut since joining the 49ers midway through the 2022 season. The Colorado native has amassed nearly 4,000 scrimmage yards and 39 touchdowns (regular season and playoffs) in 33 games played in Red & Gold. He has also throw for a score as well, making him the complete package in Shanahan’s offense.
In other news, Shanahan revealed that the team has not made a decision on opening the practice window for rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall to come off injured reserve.
Pearsall has been on IR since being shot in the chest during an attempted armed robbery following the preseason. While he has made substantial progress in his recovery, the 49ers will wait to make a decision on his status at this time.
