The 49ers have been known to be feisty during the heat of battle, something that Kyle Shanahan saw transpire between Deebo Samuel and Jake Moody on Sunday. But in the end, all is well, with both men squashing the ordeal.
The San Francisco 49ers coach confirmed Monday that the two players had put an end to their sideline squabble Week 10. The incident occurred in the fourth quarter Sunday, after the kicker missed his third field goal of the afternoon. Samuel, a team captain, was flustered in the moment, getting in Moody’s face. But while the wideout was trying to motivate him, long snapper Taybor Pepper took it differently, jawing back at Samuel. The sideline interaction ended with the latter shoving the face of the former, leaving 49ers social media in disarray.
But after emotions died down, and the visitors won the game, the issue was resolved with a plane ride home. Shanahan was happy with how Samuel and the players handled it, calling it a bit of an overreaction in the moment.

“You never want Deebo to throw a baby punch or anything on anybody on our own team. But Deebo also wasn’t saying anything bad to Jake like it sounded, he was meeting him on the field, telling him to lock in,” Shanahan said Monday during his media conference call.
Apparently that’s a sentiment that gets expressed on the 49ers’ sideline from time to time. Should a player be falling short of expectations, captains or coaches will come over and motivate them to an extent. In Shanahan and Samuel minds, that’s what was transpiring, only with the extra words and shoving taking it to the extreme.
Additionally, the coach was pleased with Pepper’s intentions as well, having Moody’s back and all. Just not the extracurriculars, so to speak.

“I like Pep’s intentions on it,” the coach stated. “I mean, he’s got his kicker’s back, but I think he kind of interpreted wrong what Deebo was doing to him and overreacted a little bit and Deebo didn’t like that and got him out of his face. That’s really about where it ended.”
There will be no fines issued to either parties moving forward, with Shanahan deeming it just emotions that got the better of all three men. But that’s not to say additional ramifications could be needed should the situation escalate in the future.
“I fine people for breaking [team] rules. This is just people being football players and dealing with stuff on the sidelines. And I didn’t really chalk that up to a big deal at all,” he said.
So all is well in 49ers land, as the coaching staff and players alike were relived to spend five hours the plane ride home with the much-needed victory on the road.
“Frustrated, in the heat of battle. I got out of character a little bit. I’ll talk to Moody & we’ll get past it,” Deebo Samuel said postgame.
