Despite looking back to his normal self, the 49ers have left Christian McCaffrey on the injury report ahead of Monday Night.

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announced that the running back will be questionable for Week 1’s matchup due to his lingering calf/achilles injury. McCaffrey returned to practice at the start of the week, looking fresh during his first official sessions in a months’ time. However, the 49ers still see him as less than 100%, making it necessary to include him on the report.

The NFL’s reigning offensive player of the year reassured the media that he would be playing earlier this week, looking forward to getting back on the football field.

“I hope so,” Christian McCaffrey said bluntly when asked if he expected his normal workload Monday.

Additionally, left guard Aaron Banks is also questionable, still dealing with a broken pinky finger. He is also expected to play Week 1. Former All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga has been listed a doubtful for Week 1 as he continues his ramp-up from a torn ACL last season.

The only 49ers officially out versus the New York Jets will be defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (knee), and linebacker Dee Winters (ankle).

More on 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey

Christian McCaffrey led the NFL last season with a career-high 1,459 rushing yards on 272 attempts and racked up 21 total touchdowns (14 rushing, seven receiving). It was his first full season in San Francisco after a midseason trade from the Carolina Panthers in 2022.

McCaffrey has rushed for 6,185 yards and 52 touchdowns, adding 509 receptions for 4,320 yards and 29 scores, in 91 games (84 starts) with the Panthers (2017-22) and 49ers (2022-23).

A three-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro selection, McCaffrey was rewarded with a two-year, $38 million extension this summer that runs through 2027.
