Domantas Sabonis is quietly having a phenomenal season

Domantas Sabonis might be having the best season of his nine-year NBA career in 2024-25.

In 52 games played before the All-Star break, the center, who’s known to be pass-first, is averaging 20.4 points per game on 60 percent from the field.

Giannis Antetokounmp is the only other player averaging 20+ points on a better field-goal percentage.

Sabonis has also taken a massive leap as a perimeter shooter, converting a career-high 45.5 percent of his 2.4 long-range attempts this season. That’s the third-highest three-point percentage in the league.

An impressive feat, even if it’s not on overwhelming volume.

Of course, Domantas Sabonis has also been his usual self on the glass. After leading the league in rebounds per game the last two seasons, he’s again the league leader, with a new personal best of 14.6 rebounds per game.

He’s also leading the league in double-doubles (49) and tied for third in triple-doubles (8), only trailing Nikola Jokic (25) and LeBron James (10), who have a combined seven MVP trophies between them.

Antetokounmpo, Jokic, and Sabonis are the only three players averaging at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Once again, his only company is former MVPs.

Now, his numbers are significantly below the others, but the rarity of his consistent, well-rounded impact.

Add in 6.2 assists per showing, and it’s easy to see why Sabonis is having probably the best season of his career. Yet, despite his three prior appearances, Sacramento’s big man was not named to the 2025 NBA All-Star team.

The Kings’ battle to even remain in the play-in certainly didn’t help Sabonis’ case, as bigs from top-seeded teams such as Jaren Jackson Jr. and Alperen Sengun cut him despite posting worse counting stats.

Sabonis also missed out on the All-Star team last season, but ended up making third-team All-NBA, a status most view are more significant.

If he stays on pace and can help Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan make a post-ASB push, history could repeat itself.
