DeMarcus Cousins on Kings’ direction after trading Fox

As many former and current NBA players were in San Francisco for this past weekend’s NBA All-Star event, former Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins made the trip to The Bay.

While there, with plenty of media around, he took part in a Q&A on Hoops Hype, where he discussed a wide variety of topics, including his thoughts on the Kings’ current state and their decision to move on from De’Aaron Fox at the trade deadline.

“Now, I get a lot of heat for speaking my opinion about the Kings or whatnot. But I just try to be as honest and truthful as I can through my own experience and just watching how things are handled now that I’m away from that. But I think De’Aaron Fox is a very special talent. I think Sacramento is lucky and blessed enough to get that talent. I think he did some things there that a lot of people didn’t think would be profitable – that team reaching the playoffs again. I think that makes him as a legendary Kings player. But I felt like once they reached that moment, I don’t think they thought past that, and in time, it showed.”

Of course, there are a few players who could better relate to Fox’s experiences during his 7.5 seasons in Sacramento.

DeMarcus Cousins went on to say that he thinks “the standard was set low, which was just making the playoffs. And I think that city, those fans, I think they deserve a lot more.”

“It’s a passionate city, it’s a passionate fan base. They stick it through thick and thin, win or loss, good or bad,” he continued. “And that’s rare to come across in sports – it’s an up-and-down thing. But I know firsthand how much those fans care about their team. I think they achieved what they wanted to achieve, and they didn’t really look past that.”
