Topics Discussed
- Sacramento Kings assistant GM Wes Wilcox departs for a job with the University of Utah.
- Did Wilcox ‘jump ship?’
- Sam says he isn’t sure if Wilcox was in line to step into Monte McNair’s role if McNair is relieved of his duties this offseason.
- “There were similar references to the ship taking on water and folks deciding to head elsewhere.”
- There isn’t any indication that McNair is also looking to head elsewhere. McNair has another year on his contract.
- Sam says Vlade Divac’s involvement with Kings owner Vivek Ranadaive has been a talking point around league circles.
- Vlade still has a role within Sacramento’s organization: “I think Vlade has been a little more involved.”
- If there was enough noise from the fanbase, would it deter ownership from being hands-on with the team’s basketball operations?
- Could the Sacramento Kings clean house if they miss the Play-In altogether?
- What does the future hold for interim head coach Doug Christie?
- Sam thinks the Kings “become one of those teams that end up having to pull the band-aid off” as far as roster construction goes.

Since hiring general manager Monte McNair in 2020, Wes Wilcox has been his lead assistant GM with the Sacramento Kings. Given the tumultuous nature of their 2024-25 season, which included firing head coach Mike Brown and trading De’Aaron Fox mid-season, there were questions about the future of the front office.
On Tuesday morning, Pete Thamel announced that the University of Utah “is targeting veteran NBA executive Wes Wilcox to be the school’s men’s basketball general manager.” It’s a surprising twist that rarely occurs in this order, as pointed out by Thamel.
If Wes Wilcox officially accepts the offer from the University of Utah, questions still remain about the future of McNair, and even interim head coach Doug Christie.
In a season filled with change, Wes Wilcox is the latest 2024-24 Sacramento Kings member to find a new home. Utah went 16-16 this most recent season, including 8-12 in Big 12 conference play.
