SACRAMENTO KINGS

Report: Kings showing interest in three veteran PG’s

Jun 12, 2025, 10:38 AM

With less than two weeks to go until the 2025 NBA Draft, the rumor mill is beginning to churn for the Sacramento Kings.

It’s no secret that new general manager Scott Perry will be seeking a point guard as the franchise looks to fill the gap left by the trade of De’Aaron Fox, and several names have emerged as potential options–both long-term and short-term possibilities.

This week, reports surfaced that linked Sacramento to Atlanta Hawks star guard Trae Young and Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star guard Darius Garland as potential long-term solutions to the position. Now, the Kings have reportedly been eyeing some less-notable options who could come at a cheaper price than Young or Garland.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Sacramento has been linked to veteran guard Jrue Holiday, who could be on the move from Boston this summer as the Celtics look to shed salary, Washington Wizards guard and former Defensive Player of the Year winner Marcus Smart, as well as soon-to-be free agent guard Malcom Brogdon.

“New general manager Scott Perry, remember, immediately highlighted the Kings’ need for improved playmaking during his introductory press conference, and sources have duly linked Sacramento to various guards known to be available this summer. That list includes Holiday in Boston and Marcus Smart in Washington … and stretches to more affordable free agent ballhandlers like Malcolm Brogdon.”

Acquiring Garland (due for $39.4 million in 2025-26) or Young (due $46 million in 2025-26) would likely mean that one of Domantas Sabonis ($43.6 million) or Zach LaVine ($47.5 million) would need to be included in the framework of a deal, which could make targeting Holiday, Smart, and Brogdon more realistic–or cheaper–from Sacramento’s perspective.

Each of the three players in Fischer’s report — Holiday (35), Brogdon (32), and Smart (31) — is over the age of 31, meaning these would be stopgap options, not long-term solutions.

Holiday makes the most money of the trio, as the defensive guard will be on the books for $32.4 million next season, followed by $34.8 million in 2026-27, and a player option for $37.2 million in 2027-28.

Smart is entering the final year of this contract and is due to be paid $21.6 million in 2025-26, while Brogdon will be a free agent (made $22.5 million this past season, but only played in 22 games).

Holiday and Smart both fit the bill as defense-first options, while Brogdon possesses a higher ceiling as a scorer and facilitator.

All indications suggest that Perry will be aggressive this offseason as the Kings look to regroup and hit the ground running this summer. Tearing down the roster and moving into a rebuild is not on the table for Sacramento, and you can expect to see Perry and company turn over every stone along the way as the NBA Draft approaches.

What’s next for the Sacramento Kings offseason?

Although the Sacramento Kings do not own a first-round pick, they are in the process of preparing for June 25-26th’s 2025 NBA Draft.

Sacramento’s first-round pick was finally conveyed to Atlanta in what was the final ripple effect from the 2022 offseason trade that brought Kevin Huerter to the Kings.

While they won’t select in the first round, Sacramento owns the 42nd pick in the draft, meaning they will select at least one player on Day 2 (June 26th) of the draft.
