As the MLB Winter Meetings get underway in Orlando, rumors are circulating, and Framber Valdez’s free agency is a major storyline to watch.

While it was widely reported last week that the San Francisco Giants will not be chasing expensive arms on the free agent market this offseason, an interesting report from the Winter Meetings has thrown some water on that notion.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Giants met with former Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez during the GM Meetings in November.

Valdez, who is arguably the top free agent arm on the market, also met with the high-spending New York Mets and splash-searching Baltimore Orioles.

More on free agent ace Framber Valdez

Framber Valdez, 31, just put the finishing touches on a 13-11 season with the Astros that included a 3.66 ERA and 187 strikeouts over 192 innings pitched (career-high 31 starts).

The 2022 World Series champion holds a career record of 81-52 and an impressive 3.36 ERA to go along with 1,053 strikeouts and a 1.204 WHIP.

Many around baseball predict Framber Valdez to ink a contract in the neighborhood of $170-200 million, meaning any team that signs him should also be ready to offer a six-to-seven-year deal.

If the San Francisco Giants want to bolster a top-heavy rotation that includes Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and question marks after, adding a star like Valdez could be precisely the type of move that team president Buster Posey is looking to make.

It will likely come down to a price point, and we’ll see if Posey gets the green light to spend big if the Giants are looking to make a big swing at this week’s Winter Meetings.

The 2025 MLB Winter Meetings have arrived. Are free agent signings set to take place this week?

While it’s currently unknown if the big-name free agents like outfielder Kyle Tucker, infielder Bo Bichette, and starting pitcher Framber Valdez will ink new deals in the coming days, there is bound to be plenty of action between now and Wednesday in Orlando, Florida.

Here’s everything that you need to know about the 2025 MLB Winter Meetings:

The 2025 MLB Winter Meetings take place December 7–10, 2025, in Orlando, Florida — the annual offseason gathering where executives from all 30 clubs come together to negotiate trades, free-agent signings, and other significant moves. With many of the league’s top free agents still available, this period often marks the beginning of a wave of blockbuster deals that can reshape club fortunes.

Beyond the big-name signings and trades, the MLB Winter Meetings host several key offseason mechanisms that shape franchises’ futures. For instance, the 2026 MLB Draft Lottery will be conducted during the meetings, offering non-playoff teams a chance at a top-six pick, with profound implications for rebuilding clubs seeking young talent.
