Tuesday: Athletics 7, Cardinals 3

WP: J.B. Wendelken (1-1, 4.94 ERA), LP: Jack Flaherty (4-5, 4.75)

Home runs were the theme of the series for Oakland, and the three home runs the A’s hit in game one of the series led the way.

Matt Olson started the scoring in the second, hitting his 13th home run of the season, giving Oakland a quick 1-0 lead. St. Louis responded quickly with a three-run inning in the bottom half of the second.

The fifth inning is where the A’s did all the damage they needed. Chad Pinder’s seventh home run of the season tied it up at three which was followed by a Marcus Semien home run to give the A’s the lead. Khris Davis doubled in two more runs after a Stephen Piscotty RBI single, to give Oakland the 7-3 win.

Wednesday: Athletics 2, Cardinals 0

WP: Daniel Mengden (2-1, 4.03), LP: Adam Wainwright (5-7, 4.35), SV: Liam Hendriks (2)

While the home runs carried the A’s offense, Oakland won this game because of Daniel Mengden. The 26-year-old pitched six strong innings, allowing just five base runners and striking out five. The victory is his first since May 18 in Detroit.

The A’s offense came via two home runs. The first came in the fourth inning when Beau Taylor took Adam Wainwright deep, giving Oakland a 1-0 lead. Wainwright allowed his second home run of the game to Matt Chapman, is 19th on the season, in the seventh.
