23 years ago today, Mitch Richmond lead Sacramento over the San Antonio Spurs at Arco Arena

All athletic events will be on pause for the foreseeable future, which is a tough pill to swallow for sports fans around the world.

While this may be a rough time for Sacramento Kings fans, we can look back on some good times while we wait for basketball to make it’s return.

April 14, 1997 – Kings 120, Spurs 106

Mitch Richmond showed his All-Star talent on this date back in 1997 when he poured in 33 points to lead the Sacramento Kings over the San Antonio Spurs at Arco Arena.

Finishing 11-of-20 from the field with six made three-pointers, Richmond also dished five assists in the win.

Brian Grant scored 20 points to go along with 12 rebounds, while Corliss Williamson and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf each scored 17 points off of the bench for Sacramento.

The then-31 year old Richmond was putting the finishing touches on a career year. The six-time All-Star averaged a career-high 25.9 points per game to go along with 3.9 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Over seven seasons with Sacramento, Richmond put up numbers of 23.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.3 steals over 517 contests.

During his time in Sacramento, the star guard made the NBA All-Star team six times, winning All-Star Game MVP in 1995. He also won a gold medal with the USA Basketball team during the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.

The Kings would go on to retire his number 2 jersey in 2003.

Richmond was inducted into the The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.
