Former Oakland Raiders cornerback Sean Smith plead guilty to a felony count of assault with bodily injury and was sentenced to one year in jail and three years of probation. The charges stemmed from an altercation in Pasadena on July 4 the year prior.

Nathan Fenno of the Los Angeles Times revealed the details behind the situation involving Smith:

Witnesses said Smith repeatedly stomped on the head of his sister’s then-boyfriend, Christopher Woods, while the man lay unconscious and bleeding near the corner of Arroyo Parkway and Colorado Boulevard.

Doctors had to insert a metal plate and screws underneath Woods’ right eye and repaired five fractures around his left eye socket with reconstructive surgery.

On Monday, August 6, there was some shocking news released about Smith. He will be a free man one day before the start of the NFL season.

According to TMZ, Smith, who is currently in the midst of serving his sentence, will be released from jail on September 5. Due to good behavior and overcrowding, the early release means he served less than half a year in jail, cutting his one-year sentence short.

It is currently unknown if any team would give Smith an opportunity. It could have something to do with his off-field situation but also do to his on-field struggles. Smith’s two seasons with the Raiders, were basically him struggling to shut down any opposing wide receivers and occasionally, being benched for poor play.

If the former Raiders cornerback does get back into the league, it’s expected he’ll face some type of discipline, likely in the form of a suspension.
