Athletics Week In Review: 7/23-7/29

The Oakland Athletics had a week full of games, all of which were on the road as they traveled to Texas for four and Colorado for three. Both series resulted in sweeps, resulting in a 4-3 week for the Athletics.

Hitter of the week: Khris Davis

Davis only had eight hits over seven games this week but it was his power that stood out. Five of his eight hits this week were home runs but what pushed him over the top was the timeliness of three of his home runs. His second home run of the week was a game-winning home run that came in the tenth inning of Tuesday’s 13-10 victory against the Rangers. The clutch hits didn’t stop Tuesday as on Wednesday, Davis added two more home runs, one in the seventh inning to make it a one-run game and then another to give the Athletics the lead in the ninth inning. Out of his five home runs, two of them were game-winners, giving Davis this weeks honors.

Pitcher of the week: Blake Treinen

Treinen has been a one of the best pitchers in Oakland’s bullpen all season and this week was no different. Treinen had a near perfect week, making three appearances, pitching three innings, and recording three saves. He only allowed one hit against ten batters and struck out five. On the season, Treinen has 27 saves on the season while owning a microscopic 1.02 ERA.

Win of the week: 13-10 over the Rangers

This wasn’t only the best win of the week but it might have been the best win of the season. Trailing the Rangers 10-2, Oakland would go on to score three in seventh, four in the eighth, and then one in the ninth on a Stephen Piscotty solo home run to bring the game to extra innings. Khris Davis made sure the game wouldn’t last much longer as he snuck a towering fly ball over the left field fence for the game-winning home run. Blake Treinen would come in and shut the door, completing the comeback victory.

Davis has not one but two game-winning home runs and the second one was bigger than the first. With two outs in the top of the ninth down one, Davis came up to the plate with Dustin Fowler on first and Jose Leclerc pitching. Leclerc would get the count to 2-2 when Davis would take a fastball to the opposite field, giving the A’s a 6-5 lead.

Even with being swept in Colorado, the Athletics were able to gain ground on both the Astros in the American League West and on the Mariners for the second Wild Card spot. Sitting at 61-46, the Athletics trail Houston by six games and Seattle by two. The upcoming week, the Athletics host the Blue Jays for three and then the Tigers for three more in Oakland.
