The deal will keep the star guard in Sacramento for at least five more seasons

UPDATE: The Sacramento Kings officially announced the De’Aaron Fox max-extension on Wednesday morning.

Per the Sacramento Kings public relations team, the following statement was released:

“De’Aaron is amongst the elite young guards in the league and I can’t say enough about how excited we are to have his talent, leadership and potential remain in Sacramento for years to come,” said McNair. “His speed and dynamic playmaking ability along with his aggressive defensive mindset are core to our team’s identity. Not only is De’Aaron a fierce competitor who is committed to winning here, his charisma and integrity are characteristics we value greatly. I anticipate a bright future ahead for him and the organization.”

Fox shared his excitement on locking in the long-term extension, releasing the following statement:

“I would like to thank Vivek and Monte for this opportunity to continue my career with the Kings,” said Fox. “It has been an honor to play in front of the best fans in all of sports and begin my career here in Sacramento. I look forward to getting back on the court with my teammates, competing hard every night and leading this team to the next level.”

Original report from November 20, 2020

Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox has reportedly agreed to sign a max-extension with the franchise that will be worth $163 million over the next five years, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Per the report, there is also a clause that could extend the deal to a super max extension worth $195.6 million.

Fox, who had his best season as a pro in 2019-20, averaged 21.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 6.8 assists while shooting 48-percent from the field.

There were multiple reports that fellow 2017 draftees Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchell were primed for max-extensions once free-agency opened up on Friday afternoon–with no rumors surfacing regarding the future of the Kings’ talented point guard.

Any concerns that the fanbase might have had were quickly extinguished in the early hours of free-agency, with the 22-year-old making it clear that he wants to be in Sacramento for the foreseeable future with the commitment.

General manager Monte McNair now has a roster with an All-Star talent that will be under contract for the next five-plus years, a massive step in the right direction for the franchise as a whole.

It’s De’Aaron Fox’s team.

Now, McNair must look to build around the young guard. The last thing that Sacramento wants is to waste the next five years and allow Fox to hit the open market as an unrestricted free-agent once his deal expires.

The Kings need to win.

Inking Fox to a longterm deal was the first–and most important–step in the process.
