“Probably not like that.” That was Oakland A’s manager Bob Melvin’s response when asked if he had ever seen a finish like that of last night after a crazy sequence of events at the plate turned an amazing comeback, into one of the most bizarre finishes possible in yesterdays 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Astros.

What looked like would be a quiet night for the A’s at the plate through the first 8 innings, turned into a comeback fitting with the magic that has been this A’s season…

….After this point things stopped going in the A’s favor. In a play that Athletics fans will be remembering for some time, catcher Jonathan Lucroy  picked up the ball and attempted to tag out Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, who was shifting back and forth to avoid the tag, and dropped the ball (both literally and metaphorically). He then picked the ball up only to hit Bregman on the helmet, with the ball sailing past first baseman Mark Canha. Kyle Tucker then came in to score. Game over.

Post game, when asked about the blunder, Lucroy stated, “In the moment it happened fast. I screwed it all up.” Lucroy continued, “I let them down defensively behind the plate there. That’s on me.”

In addition to losing the game, All-Star Blake Treinen’s streak of 20 consecutive save opportunities converted was snapped in the loss.
