Report: Mike Bibby Interviews For Sacramento State Head Coaching Job

Former Sacramento Kings guard Mike Bibby might be coming back to work the 916, but not for his old team.
According to Jeff Goodman of Stadium, the 43-year-old has interviewed for Sacramento State’s head coaching opening for its men’s basketball program.
Bibby, who played point guard for the Kings during the 2001-2008 seasons, has been coaching high school basketball since 2014 for Arizona high schools Shadow Mountain High School (his alma mater) and Hillcrest Prep High School.
Although Bibby hasn’t coached since 2019, his name has been mentioned in various high school and college circles, with Sacramento State now emerging as a possibility for the former standout guard.
Sacramento State is looking to hire a head coach following Brian Katz’s retirement that took place just days before the 2021-22 season began.
“Due to an ongoing health issue, my family has convinced me to retire,” Katz said in a statement that was released on November 5th. “After coaching for 45 years, this already feels very strange. I’ve woken up every day at 4 a.m. fully invested in my players and my staff until I laid my head on the pillow at night.
“I want to thank all of my former players and assistant coaches. In truth, there are many months of the year where, as a coach, you spend more time with your team than your family. I do not remember every game, but I do remember every player. I truly believe the player-coach relationship officially begins when they are done playing for you.
“Lastly, I would like to thank all the fans that supported us over the years. You made the Nest a very difficult place to play for the opposition.”
Longtime Hornets associate head coach Brandon Laird took over for Katz and led Sacramento State to an 11-18 record during the 2021-22 season.
