J. Ross: Best and Worst of the Sports Weekend

 

Every Monday on the Lo-Down, Damien Barling and I ask you for your best and worst of the sports weekend.  Today will be no different.  Starting at noon we will take your entries.  Usually we get a wide variety of examples of things that made you happy and also those things that frustrated you over the last weekend in sports.  Here are a few entries from me as we start a new week on Sports 1140 KHTK.

It was a great weekend for the favorites.  It is not always easy to picked to win and then to go ahead and do it.  This weekend featured several favorites that prevailed.  The Golden State Warriors finished the Cavs with a game 4 blowout and a sweep of LeBron James.  The Warriors now have won back to back titles and three in the last 4 seasons.  Kevin Durant took home the finals MVP and now the Warriors will look for a rare three-peat next season.

Justify entered Belmont with a chance at a rare Triple Crown.  Justify had a few new horses to compete with.  Could Justify navigate the longer track in New York?  Justify was in the first post and led from wire to wire to take home the Triple Crown for Bob Baffert.  Horse racing fans and all sports fans enjoyed greatness, as Justify is still undefeated.

Rafael Nadal dominates clay.  The tennis world knows it, the sports world knows it.  Nadal did it again on Sunday at Roland Garros.  A straight set win for Nadal gave him his 11th title in the French Open.  Nadal is at his best in this tournament and the last two weeks were no different.

How about local baseball?  It was another good weekend for the San Francisco Giants.  The Giants won on Sunday in DC.  They beat Max Sherzer and the Nationals 2-0 and now have won 8 of the last 10.  The Giants have worked themselves back over .500 and continue to climb the NL West standings.  As for the A’s, they won 3 of 4 against the Royals to make their way to 2 games above .500.  The A’s problem is that the division has been so strong.

My main worst of the weekend also came from baseball.  Tough news out of southern California with Shohei Ohtani.  The Angels are fearful that Ohtani may need Tommy John surgery.  The Angels are going to wait about three weeks to re-evaluate but this news is not good.  Ohtani has been a blessing for baseball and if were to have Tommy John then he would be out for the rest of this season and all of next.  This news is brutal and baseball doesn’t need any of its stars missing games.

I want to end with one more piece of good stuff from this past weekend.  This upcoming week will feature the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in New York for the best golfers in the world.  Leading into that tournament we got a gem at the St. Jude’s Classic with Dustin Johnson’s finishing shot on Sunday.  How about that for calm, cool and collected?
