The second day of training camp practice has wrapped up for the San Francisco 49ers as players and coaches spoke to the media afterwards to give their thoughts on the upcoming season.

Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans was the coach on the podium Thursday, impressed by the defensive performances his unit has put out over the last two days.

“It‘s a lot of encouragement. Excited and happy about the unit we have back there,” Ryans said post-practice. “All those guys have done a great job. They’re off to a really great start. All we’re looking for is to continue to compete and get better, and if we open the season up that way, we’ll be very happy.”

One of the standouts thus far has been cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, dominate in pass coverage as he broke up a deep ball intended for Brandon Aiyuk. A mainstay for the 49ers since being drafted in 2018, “E-Man” had his best season in 2021, registering one interception and 11 passes successfully defended in 11 games for the Red & Gold.

Now entering a contract year, his coach sees the proof in the tape that Moseley is ascending to top of his craft.

“E-man has continue to grow and developed. He’s one of the hardest working guys we have…He’s at the top of his game,” Ryans said.

The 49ers defensive coach also raved about the newest member of the secondary, Charvarius Ward, seeing his impact on the group from the moment he stepped foot in the building.

“He’s come in and done everything we’ve asked him to do…He’s raised our competition level in the DB room and guys know they have to step and rise to his level,” Ryans said.

Showing out on day 2 of training camp, Ward was on an island Thursday, not allowing a completed pass throughout the session. The former Kansas City Chiefs put together his best season in 2021 as well, nabbing two INTs, ten passes defended and 67 tackles.

No press conference is complete without discussing the impact of All-Pro defensive end Nick Bosa as Ryans gushed over the sheer ability that the Ohio State Buckeye brings to the table.

“[He’s] going to be big-time playmaker for us. One of best D-ends in the league. This year, he’s not worrying about rehabbing an injury. Worrying about getting better as a football player. It’s exciting to see where he’s going to go,” Ryans said with a slight grin.

Missing from practice today was defensive lineman Arik Armstead as Ryans declined to comment on his absence, deferring to head coach Kyle Shanahan on personnel updates.
