On Monday, Judge Sue L. Robinson, the NFL and NFL Players Association’s jointly appointed disciplinary officer, announced a six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy.

Two days later, the NFL said it plans to appeal that decision. The NFL had until Thursday morning to appeal.

“The NFL notified the NFLPA that it will appeal Judge Robinson’s disciplinary decision and filed its brief this afternoon. Commissioner Roger Goodell will determine who will hear the appeal,” the NFL said in a press release.

Prior to Judge Robinson’s announcement, the NFL Players Association [NFLPA] said it would not appeal her decision. The NFLPA has two days to respond to the league’s appeal.

Watson was traded from the Houston Texans to the Browns in 2022. He then signed a five-year, $230 million extension.

The 26-year-old quarterback has denied any wrongdoing and has not been criminally charged for the accusations levied against him. Earlier this summer, Watson reached settlements with 20 of the 24 women who accused him of sexual misconduct during massage therapy sessions. On Monday, the day Judge Robinson’s initial decision was released, three of the four remaining civil cases against Watson were settled.
