The Las Vegas Raiders turned some heads last week after running back Josh Jacobs started the game and played multiple snaps.

While some starters played in Thursday’s Hall of Fame game against the Jaguars, quarterback Derek Carr and star receiver Davante Adams sat out, which led to questions about why Jacobs played. He finished with 30 yards on five carries and 14 receiving yards. After the game, coach Josh McDaniels said he decided to play Jacobs and other backs for the real-game situations that can’t be replicated in practice.

Before training camp on Monday, McDaniels was again asked about Jacobs and the team’s chances of trading the fourth-year back.

“JJ is a guy that obviously we know what he’s done. And as I said after the game, I really do believe that the backs in any situation, they don’t really get to simulate what’s going to happen during the course of the regular season. and so giving them an opportunity to get tackled, take care of the football and get acclimated to a new system, quite honestly…We felt like that was a good thing, a good opportunity for all our backs that played. We have a lot of confidence in JJ and he did well with his opportunities, which we hoped we would and he did, but no, we have no desire to do that [trade Josh Jacobs] at all.”

Jacobs is in the last year of his rookie contract. Since joining the Raiders as the 24th pick in the 2019 draft, he’s run for 3,087 yards and scored 28 touchdowns. The team declined the fifth-year option on his contract, meaning Jacobs becomes a free agent next off-season.
