The San Francisco 49ers are heading into their final week of preparation before their first preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday.

With the team off Monday, now is a good time to recap the weekend out in Santa Clara as the Red & Gold finish up training camp and head into regular practice. There was a lot to unpack in week 3 of training camp, from Trey Lance’s arm generating speculation again to Bryant Young’s Hall of Fame Speech sweeping the nation.

Let’s take a look at a jam-packed weekend for the Red & Gold.

Trey Lance’s Arm Fatigue Confirmed Amidst Awful Sunday Showing

A couple weeks into training camp the Trey Lance arm fatigue story had seemed to die down as the young QB has been slinging the rock for almost two weeks straight now.

Well think again.

After posting a workout video with him and Lance in the offseason mocking the rumors, WR Brandon Aiyuk backtracked slightly after the young QB struggled Sunday at camp.

“One thing I’ve learned is that you never know what these guys’ arms feel like. The same way for us. We go out there, some days our legs are tired. They may expect us to break out a route and come out of our breaks a lot faster than we did and our legs are a little bit tired and we can’t do so. Same thing for them, we feel like, is something that I learned. I can see that you never know what those guys arms are feeling like. They’re coming out here and throwing a bunch of balls, so… We just got to look at it, get it corrected, and then come back, get the day off, and get better,” Aiyuk said Sunday.

He has a point, bodies are a tricky thing to judge, some days just aren’t as effective as others. That’s normal.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan previously commented on the rumors, not denying them but instead saying he’s worked with other quarterbacks with the same issue.

“I think it happened one day in training camp last year, but that would be accurate with every quarterback I’ve ever coached. So yeah, guys sometimes get arm fatigue, but Trey’s arm was great throughout all of OTAs. It’s been great talking to him through the whole summer, and I expect it to be the best that it’s looked tomorrow when we practice. But for a report to come out about a guy’s arm soreness, I get it. There could be a report about every quarterback I’ve ever coached, though, too, but no, I think we’re alright with his arm soreness,” Shanahan said.

Lance finished the day 4 for 12, with an interception to Fred Warner and another dropped INT by Charvarius Ward. Despite the struggles, there has been a lot of optimism from camp this year regarding the young QB.

Like athlete’s bodies, some days are up, some days are down, that’s life.

No Love For The Rams

This may come as a surprise but the Red & Gold aren’t too fond of their California and NFC West rivals, the Los Angeles Rams.

I know shocking right.

Jokes aside, 49ers safety Jimmie Ward spoke candidly about the Super Bowl champs Sunday when he joined Tom Pelissero and Maurice Jones-Drew on NFL Network, saying he has no love for an opponent that wouldn’t shake the 49ers’ hands after losses in 2021.

“But they walked off the field. But when you finally win a game, you want to shake our hands? All right, I got something for you,” Ward said.

The Bay Area squad notably lost to the Rams in the NFC championship game last season, 20-17.

We’ll see what Ward means by “something” but expect fireworks on the field when these two clubs meet for the first time this season on October 3rd at Levi’s Stadium.

Reinforcements

The 49ers have had a few injuries in camp as of late, including TE Jordan Matthews, who tore his ACL last week.

With two open spots available, the Red & Gold announced the signings of WR Willie Snead and OT Jordan Mills Saturday.

Snead, 29, has played for a variety of teams in his seven-year career, most recently having stints with the Carolina Panthers and Las Vegas Raiders in 2021. The former Ball State playmaker has garnered 279 receptions for 3,431 yards and 16 touchdowns. Snead has also played in six postseason contests, tallying 19 receptions for 165 yards.

The wideout had been without a home before working out for the 49ers Friday, now joining a prolific offensive attack of Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle.

Meanwhile, Mills comes to the Bay after spending last season with the New Orleans Saints.

The 31-year-old lineman has also played for the Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys in his nine-year career. He has appeared in 100 regular season games and started one postseason contest, according to the team statement.

The veteran OT will serve as necessary depth fo the preseason after Jaylon Moore went down with a leg strain recently.
