The San Francisco 49ers have entered their final week of preparation before their first preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday.
With the team off Monday, the Red & Gold hit training camp hard Tuesday as Trey Lance gears up for his first preseason as the starter. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Tuesday morning Trey Lance and the starters would see action in the first and final preseason games this year. The coaching staff is opting to keep the starters off the field in week 2 when they face the Minnesota Vikings.
49ers Training Camp Diary Notes
The North Dakota State product redeemed himself Tuesday after a subpar showing Sunday.
The first-year starter finished the day 14 for 19 in four 11-on-11 sessions, including two TDs during the red zone portion of practice. Lance showed much more pocket presence Tuesday, standing strong before firing off numerous good throws to his receiving core. On one occasion inside the 10-yard line, Lance was faced with pressure from both edges, but instead of panicking, he simply dumped it off over the top to his check-down tight end. These are the plays you want to see from a 22-year-old quarterback, not forcing it but simply taking what the defense is giving you.

Shanahan and the coaching staff put Lance through the fire Tuesday, having him on the field for the most amount of reps in camp thus far. With the extended opportunity, the young QB got to show off the whole arsenal of skills, including a few read options between him and “wideback” Deebo Samuel.
Lance’s best play of the day came on a designed zone read that the QB kept, fooling the defense momentarily before sprinting up the left sideline to the house for a 65-yard touchdown.

Once again his favorite target of the day was Brandon Aiyuk, connecting on a few passes over the middle after Lance had gone through his progressions. This is important because the QB isn’t locking in on his number one or two options, surveying the field to find who’s open, setting his team up for success on the next snap.
Despite today’s performance, Lance has been making strides as a leader all camp, with one receiver comparing him to another young superstar under center.
“I came in with Josh Allen and the Bills and he gives me that same type of energy. That ‘I’m ready to take the next step’ energy,” WR Ray-Ray McCloud said after practice Tuesday.
We’ll have to wait until Friday to see the second-year QB in action, but if he keeps making improvements like today, he’ll be a problem for the NFC west for years to come.
