Trey Sermon Leads the 49ers Running Back Group Wednesday

The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up their final training camp practice Wednesday before they take on the Green Bay Packers in their first preseason game Friday. The Bay Area team hit the final practice, which was their longest session of training camp so far, pretty hard.
Among the standouts Wednesday were the running backs, finding holes up the middle and to the outside throughout the day. With presumed starters Elijah Mitchell and Jeff Wilson Jr. held out for maintenance, other RBs were put on display, including one named Trey.
No, not Trey Lance, although he had a few nice scrambles. Trey Sermon.
The second-year back out of Ohio State was fantastic Wednesday, having numerous good runs on the inside of the offensive line, and to the outside of the line as well. His best play of the day came on a run to the right, squeezing his way through traffic to find the touchdown during the redzone portion of practice.

The former Buckeye showcased his speed when he hit the outside as well, getting past his defenders for a few 10-to-15 yard gains. We also saw his catching abilities Wednesday, snagging a few check-down passes from Lance and the other backup QBs that went for considerable gains.
A busy day for RB Trey Sermon, who was very involved in the offense with Mitchell not participating. Expecting that might be a tune up for Sermon to get plenty of work against the Packers on Friday. Sermon had some solid runs and also made some plays out of the backfield.

Of course, the simulated plays are against his own defense so there isn’t any full-on tackling as the team looks out for one another. But come Friday, Trey Sermon running backs are as eager as ever to finish a run against the opposition.
“I’m so excited to go out there and show what I’m about. I’m eager about that. I might not get any sleep before, but I’m all right,” an excited Ty Davis-Price said post-practice Wednesday.
With Sermon getting the bulk of the touches with the first-team unit, expect to see the 23-year-old in a featured role Friday night as he makes his case for a prominent spot in 2022.
