One of the biggest questions the San Francisco 49ers have surrounding them is what is going to happen to former starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

In an interview with The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York spoke about the possibilities of keeping Jimmy Garoppolo on the roster for the season. A lot of people, fans and pundits, assumed Garoppolo would have been traded by now. If he is still on the roster on week 1, his $24 million contract becomes guaranteed.

“I’ve said this before, you can’t have enough good quarterbacks and good football players,” York told Tim Kawakami on The TK Show. “I’m not going to get into roster discussions and what John and Kyle want to do. But I will support them in sort of anything that they want to make this team as good as it can possibly be.”

York went on to say the team expereienced something similar with Joe Montana and Steve Young.

“But we’ve said it before: We’re happy to keep Jimmy. We’re happy to have him on the roster. And if that’s the case, then that’s the case,” York told Kawakami on The TK Show.

Earlier this summer, head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch announced the team would start Trey Lance at quarterback this season. York told Kawakami they trust Lance.

“He’s a great young man. I think he’s going to continue to grow,” York told Kawakami. “But having Kyle and John there helping him and aiding him in his process — I think you can be in a lot worse situations than having Kyle Shanahan as your head coach for a young quarterback.”
