With the 49ers secondary suffering a slew of hamstring injuries in the preseason, the red & gold desperately needed to add to their secondary core. On Monday, they did just that.

San Francisco signed veteran safety Tashaun Gipson Sr., the team announced via a press release. In order to complete the transaction, the 49ers cut injured WR Austin Mack.

“Gipson Sr. appeared in 12 games and finished with 47 tackles, three passes defensed, two interceptions, one fumble recovery and 1.0 sack with the Bears in 2021,” the press release stated. “A 32-year-old native of Dallas, Texas, Gipson Sr. attended the University of Wyoming where he appeared in 50 games and registered 250 tackles, 30 passes defensed, nine interceptions, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 1.0 sack.”

Gipson Sr., 32, last played in Chicago, spending the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Bears.  The former Pro Bowler started his career with Cleveland in 2012, before spending three seasons in Jacksonville, and one with Houston. In 10 seasons, the veteran safety has registered 563 tackles, 14 TFLs, 27 INTs, 3 TDs, and 1 FF in 140 games.

The veteran worked out with San Francisco last Thursday during the team’s joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings. Gipson Sr. spent his Cleveland tenure with current 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, providing a bit of familiarity heading into the regular season.

With Jimmie Ward sidelined potentially through week 1, Gipson will provide much needed depth among a young secondary core.
