49ers Waive 2021 Third-Round Pick Trey Sermon

Another big shock among the 49ers’ roster moves as former Ohio State running back Trey Sermon was waived by the team Wednesday afternoon, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Sermon, a third-round pick in 2021, fell down the pecking order in his rookie year, only appearing in nine games and starting two of them. The former Buckeye ran 41 times for 167 yards and one TD in 2021, surrendering game-time to Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson Jr., and JaMychal Hasty.

Year two seemed to be different for Sermon, progressing well through training camp enough to impress head coach Kyle Shanahan and the front office.

“Trey came a long way here in a year. He’s someone we can count on,” Shanahan said last week regarding the second-year running back.

The good faith has since run out however, as the team claimed offensive lineman Blake Hance earlier Wednesday, putting the 49ers over the limit of 53 men on the roster.

The team hopes to bring back Sermon on the practice squad, but run the risk of him being claimed by another team.

Sermon struggled in three preseason appearances, managing eight carries for 20 yards in his final game with the Red & Gold last week in Houston.

The 49ers will now head into the regular season with four running backs on the roster: Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson Jr., rookie Ty Davis-Price and undrafted rookie Jordan Mason.
