The San Francisco 49ers released its unofficial depth chart for week 1 of the regular season Tuesday. The team is by no means tied to the current rankings, but it does give us an indication of their plans in the Windy City.

The 49ers travel to Chicago this week to take on quarterback Justin Fields and the Bears at Solider Field. A town known for its weather, the Windy City will possibly provide its’ distant cousin for Sunday’s game: rain.

“A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 72,” the National Weather Service states for Sunday’s forecast in Chicago. “Cloudy; brief showers in the morning followed by heavy showers in the afternoon,” reports AccuWeather.com, also noting winds close to 17 mph.

Yep, prepare for some slippery conditions to kick off the NFL season.

Anyways, here’s how the depth chart for the 49ers currently shakes out. Names in bold mean that player is a starter.

The biggest surprises come in the secondary and defensive line. Drake Jackson, a rookie out of USC, is currently listed as the second edge rusher behind Samson Ebukam. The latter was a force for the 49ers in 2021, registering 4.5 sacks and 38 total tackles last season. The former Los Angeles Ram has been rock solid during training camp, giving the coaching staff no reason to have his spot in jeopardy. Still, this is a position to keep an eye on, with the team possessing one of the deepest defensive lines in football.

Safety George Odum is the other big change, replacing the injured Jimmie Ward. The team has been in a frenzy ever since general manager John Lynch said Ward would be going on the PUP list due to a pulled hamstring, missing the first four games of the regular season. San Francisco will most likely look to bring back one of the secondary members from the preseason, Tashaun Gipson Sr., and Dontae Johnson could be candidates to fill in.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan should confirm his roster when the team is back at practice Wednesday afternoon.
