The NFL is officially back!

As everyone prepares for Sunday, there is no shortage of storylines that fans will be watching. And the 49ers certainly has their share of stories that should keep the season interesting.

Here are bold predictions from the Sactown Sports team for the San Francisco 49ers this upcoming season:

Nick Cattles

It’s VERY difficult to predict any season that involves a first time full-time starting quarterback. Who knows what Trey Lance will look like and how he might or might not evolve? With that said, this is a talented roster. I’m comfortable with the D-Line (mostly because of Bosa & Armstead) and the linebacker corps is one of the best in the league. The secondary will be good enough IF they stay healthy (can’t predict injuries). Aside from Lance, the other offensive question for me is that O-Line, particularly on the interior. And that front’s training camp and preseason performance didn’t make me feel much better. By the way, don’t get me started on the possible Jimmy G drama hovering over like a dark cloud in a cartoon.

Ramie Makhlouf

Obligatory QB speculation: Jimmy G will play in at least 4 games. Whether it’s an injury, a change at QB1, or a mid-game benching in a game that’s still in reach, despite some Trey Lance struggles (a la Kurt Warner-Eli Manning), I think it’s inevitable that we see Garoppolo at least a handful of times this season. You have a leaky offensive line, a QB that likes to run, and a team that is in the middle of a Super Bowl window and can’t throw away wins while Lance goes through growing pains. The good news is this is at least a 10-win football team, almost regardless of who’s at quarterback. I’ll put them at 11 wins, all in all, taking the last wild card spot in the NFC.

Carmichael Dave

It’s an up-and-down season for the Niners. Trey Lance shows both his amazing potential and his “rookie” weaknesses. Injuries are also quite the story, and the Niners finish 10-7, just outside the wildcard spots.

Jason Ross

I like the roster the 49ers will put out there each week but the biggest question is at the game’s most important position, quarterback. The team’s success will go hand in hand with the development of Trey Lance. I am a big believer in Kyle Shanahan and his ability to produce a quality run game to take the pressure off of Lance. The 49ers may have backed into a luxury because I believe Jimmy G will get some run and help keep this team going forward at some point during the season. I think the 49ers will be a playoff team and they will end up 10-7 during the regular season and be a major postseason threat.

Frankie Cartoscelli

I think that the San Francisco 49ers post another double-digit win total and Trey Lance proves that he is THAT guy. Prediction: A 10-7 record and the 49ers end up getting another rematch with the Rams this postseason.

San Francisco has a roster full of elite talent that is ready to win. Now.

The problem is that the position most important to the team’s success, quarterback, is not there yet. With Trey Lance set to start his first full season in the NFL, the 49ers will experience growing pains along the way. A slew of soft tissue injuries and a tough schedule doesn’t help, with safety Jimmie Ward already landing on the PUP list to start the year.

The Red & Gold have followed a pattern similar to their baseball counterpart, SF Giants, over the last few years. Make a deep run, then miss the postseason. Make the Super Bowl in the 2019 season, then miss the playoffs altogether the next year. I don’t know if they’ll continue that same trend this year (the NFC is lackluster in terms of the competition) but expect the 49ers to be either a bubble team or barely miss out on a wildcard spot this season.
