UPDATE: According to James Ham of The Kings Beat, the Sacramento Kings have waived guard DJ Steward just days after reportedly inking the 20-year-old to a partially guaranteed deal for the 2022-23 season.

Per the report, Sacramento hopes that Steward will clear waivers and be able to join the team’s G-League affiliate, the Stockton Kings.

Original story

The Sacramento Kings have signed guard DJ Steward to a partially guaranteed deal for the 2022-23 season, per HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Steward, 20, spent last season with Sacramento’s G-League affiliate in Stockton. Over 30 appearances, the 6’1 guard averaged 14.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 45 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the three-point line.

According to Scotto’s report, Steward’s deal includes $50,000 guaranteed and could be worth up to $1 million if he makes the 15-man roster following training camp.

Over the past two summers, Steward has been a part of Sacramento’s Summer League rosters during play in the California Classic and Las Vegas Summer League. Last fall, Steward was also on the team’s training camp roster before inking a deal with the team to play for the G-League affiliate in Stockton.

By bringing Steward back into the fold, the Kings now have a familiar face waiting in the wings in Stockton if there are injuries to any lead guards in Sacramento’s rotation.

With veteran guards Quinn Cook, Matthew Dellavedova, and Sam Merrill also vying for opportunities in Sacramento, Steward will have some competition during training camp later this month at Golden 1 Center.
