This isn’t an ideal list that the Sacramento Kings want to be on, let alone ranked in the top spot.

Following the Seattle Mariners’ win over the Oakland Athletics on Friday night, the M’s clinched a playoff spot for the first time since the 2001 season, ending a 20-year postseason drought.

After two decades of struggles, the Mariners get to remove themselves from the top of the list of North American professional sports teams with the longest playoff droughts. With Seattle heading to Major League Baseball’s Wild Card round, there is a new number-one team atop the list of consecutive seasons without a postseason appearance:

The Sacramento Kings.

Since the 2006-07 season, the Kings have failed to reach the postseason, something that has now placed them in purgatory as the owners of the longest playoff drought in North American professional sports.

With a revamped roster that now includes the likes of two-time All-Star center Domantas Sabonis, fourth-overall pick Keegan Murray, talented guard Kevin Huerter, and sharpshooter Malik Monk, Kings fans are hoping that their stay at the top of this list only lasts until May when the NBA playoffs begin.

Until then, the Kings are number one.

As the saying goes, “sometimes, it’s hard to be king”. In this case, it truly is.
