If there was a feud between the quarterback and head coach, they both have somewhat denied it this week.

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo took the podium Friday afternoon, immediately being bombarded with questions regarding a clip of the quarterback’s lips Sunday night.

In case you missed it, Jimmy Garoppolo was caught mouthing some choice words for Shanahan on Sunday Night Football’s broadcast this past weekend. The lip read occurred after the quarterback threw an interception in the fourth quarter, showing his displeasure with the play-calling.

“All your plays suck man,” Garoppolo was interpreted as saying Sunday against the Broncos. Responding to the clip Friday, Jimmy didn’t seem sure if he said that, stating that a lot gets said on the gridiron.

“I’ve heard about this clip, actually yeah, we were talking about it yesterday. I don’t know, I can’t read lips,” Garoppolo said Friday. “I’m sure I’ve said a lot worse things on the field than that. So I’m glad they caught that rather than something else, but I’m not sure exactly what I was saying, but it is what it is.”

But while the quarterback wasn’t sure, his head coach was positive he didn’t use those words, laughing it off for even thinking such blasphemy.

“First of all, the clip to me is a joke so can’t believe we’re talking about it. I’m pretty sure that’s not what he said,” Shanahan said Thursday.

Despite denying it, Shanahan also admitted that he hadn’t seen the clip Thursday, instead choosing to believe otherwise. As for their relationship, both have said the same thing: Business as usual. The pairing has great aspirations for this team, sometimes it boils over into the spotlight when frustration begins to mount.

Sunday’s loss to the Broncos is an example of that.

Nevertheless, both consider each other brothers and have the upmost respect for one another.

“Me and Jimmy are around each other every single day so there’s not any awkwardness from us or anything that’s come from each other,” Shanahan stated.

“I mean, you say a lot of things in the heat of battle that I hope people don’t here. But no, me and Kyle are cool, we really are. We’ve been through a lot of different types of seasons, this being no different,” Garoppolo continued. “But we’re all early on in the season still so we got to, as a team, find our identity. Me and Kyle, obviously just keep working and getting on the same page more and more, but we’ve been through this before. And I’d say it’s a long process.”
