Davion Mitchell is here to stay.

The Sacramento Kings announced on Wednesday that they have exercised its 2023-24 team option on sophomore guard Davion Mitchell.

Mitchell, 24, was selected by Sacramento with the ninth overall pick out of Baylor in last year’s NBA Draft.

The defensive-minded guard averaged 11.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 41 percent from the field and 31 percent from three-point range over 75 appearances (19 starts) during the 2021-22 season.

Mitchell was named to the NBA’s Rising Stars Game during February’s All-Star Weekend in Cleveland, although the NCAA national champion was unable to participate due to a hand injury.

With Mitchell under contract for the next two seasons at the very least, Kings general manager Monte McNair has done a solid job of building another young core in Sacramento. Mitchell, De’Aaron Fox, Kevin Huerter, and Malik Monk are all 24 years old. Rookie forward Keegan Murray is just 22 years old. All-Star center Domantas Sabonis is 26 years old.

The best part? All of those players are under contract for at least the next two seasons.

Sacramento’s time to build is now, and Davion Mitchell will be a big part of what McNair and his front office are building here in the 916.
