49ers Kyle Shanahan Says Arik Armstead Out For Week 5 at Panthers

Friday morning for the San Francisco 49ers did not go to plan.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed on KNBR that defensive tackle Arik Armstead will not play Week 5 against the Carolina Panthers. Armstead has been dealing with plantar fasciitis in his foot since the start of Week 3’s practices, missing the game against the Broncos to recover.
The Sacramento native returned to the field Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams but was removed in the fourth quarter with yet another foot/ankle injury.
“No it was his other foot, still got some things in both feet,” Shanahan said Friday. “We know it’s this week, it’ll probably be next week too. So I’m calling it more now week-to-week.”
The option of going on injured reserve is in play for Armstead, but no decision has been made at this time.

“Got a new thing on a different foot last week that made it a little bit worse,” Shanahan said on the Bay Area radio station Friday.
Shanahan also added that fellow DT Javon Kinlaw is unlikely to play, still dealing with irritation in his surgically repaired knee. The issue kept the former first-round pick out for Week 4 and now looks set to remain on the sidelines for a second consecutive game.
Arik Armstead, 28, has been one of the most consistent members of San Francisco’s defense, featuring in all games since the 2017 season before missing Week 3. He is now set to miss his second game of the 2022 NFL season.
Meanwhile, DT Javon Kinlaw is still dealing with knee irritation in his surgically repaired ACL, forcing him to miss Week 4’s contest. Not showing much improvement during practice, the former first-round pick could be out for the team’s next two road games as well.
“I think he’s close to Arik also,” Shanahan said about Kinlaw. “You know, we expected some of this going through the offseason. We knew some things would act up on him. And we hoped he could get to the game last week, not much improvement this week. So he’s definitely out this week, will most likely be next week also.”
