Kings Hope To Continue Successful Preseason In Matchup With Suns

Following two 30-point victories that opened up preseason play, the Sacramento Kings will face the Phoenix Suns this evening in their penultimate exhibition game as we inch closer to opening night.

Here are some things to watch for–or listen to–when the Kings take the floor tonight:

Injury Report

Richaun Holmes and Keegan Murray are both currently experiencing non-COVID illnesses and are unlikely to suit up tonight in Phoenix.

Holmes fully participated in Tuesday’s practice, but had to leave the session early after experiencing some illness symptoms. Murray was not seen at practice as it was later revealed that the rookie forward had stayed home from practice to rest.

As of Wednesday morning, it’s unclear if either player made the trip to Phoenix, but it’s likely that Sacramento will play it safe with both Holmes and Murray with the regular season opener exactly one week away.

Brown Will Continue To Shorten Up Rotation

Although Holmes and Murray could be absent on Wednesday, you can still expect Kings head coach Mike Brown to deploy a shortened rotation against the Suns.

During Tuesday’s practice, Brown told the media that fans can expect to see a similar rotation to that of Sunday’s when the Kings faced the Portland Trail Blazers. In that game, Brown played 12 players in his rotation before going deeper into his bench during the closing minutes.

Quinn Cook, Chima Moneke, and Sam Merrill–the only three players that did not see the floor on Sunday night–will all play tonight, according to Brown.

Last Call?

This very well could be the last time that we see some players that are currently on the roster.

Following Sacramento’s preseason opener in Los Angeles on October 3rd, Brown told the media that no roster cuts would occur before he and the coaching staff were able to take in “one or two more” games to narrow down the rotation.

After Wednesday night’s game in Phoenix, the Kings will have one last tune-up game on their schedule–Friday night against the Lakers at Golden 1 Center–before the 19th’s season-opener against Portland, meaning that roster cuts could happen as soon as Thursday.

Teams around the league have already started the process of trimming their 20-man training camp rosters down to the league’s maximum of 15. The Kings will need to cut three players before October 17th to get its roster to the 15-man limit.

Keep an eye on Brown’s rotation tonight, especially at the backup forward spots and third-string point guard position.
