The San Francisco 49ers offense is producing a mere 20.3 points per game through the first six weeks of the season. That’s good enough for 19th of 32 teams in the national football league, down dramatically from last season at just over 25 PPG.

Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons was the best example, producing two touchdowns in the second quarter before being stymied in the second half. As you already know, SF lost that game, 28-14, due to injuries and lackluster play from the offense.

Despite the ebbs and flows this season, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo believes the offense is starting to click again.

“Oh, yeah. I think you see it at practice too. I mean, there’s just certain plays where there’s a trust factor. I think that plays a big part in any offense,” Garoppolo stated Thursday after practice.

To his credit, Week 6 was one of his best individual outings this season, posting 296 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. It would have been more if not for a few drops by his teammates.

Nevertheless, a quarterback has to trust his offensive counterparts, one of the reasons the play-calling has been so conservative thus far. Jimmy didn’t have a playbook before the end of the preseason, that factors into it too. But the most important thing is trust for a QB, starting to feel more in-sync with his pass-catchers each week.

“Just between the quarterback and the skill guys, there’s a trust factor,” Garoppolo explained. “It’s not just given either, you gotta earn that stuff. You gotta earn it in the locker room, out on the field, away from the facility, whatever you do, but yeah, I think there’s a trust factor that we’re moving in the right direction. We just need to make make that happen quicker rather than later.”

He’s right about that last point, going up against the QB Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday afternoon.

The 49ers haven’t faced this midwest powerhouse since their heartbreaking Super Bowl loss in 2020, defeated 31-20. All of the players and coaches had to watch the tape this week, regardless of how emotional it may be. That includes Jimmy G, the quarterback who overshot wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders to put the nail in the coffin on Super Bowl No. 6 for the Red & Gold.

Garoppolo was candid when asked about it, saying it’s tough to keep the emotions in check, but that it gets easier to move on with time.

“I think you just kind of you have to, I think is a big part of it. Once you’re watching the film, though, I mean, the emotions hit right away. But once you kind of get into it, and you’re kind of thinking about the game plan, the emotions kind of just fade away a little bit,” Garoppolo said. “It’s still there, but you just gotta move on.”
