With each passing day, San Francisco gets healthier and healthier.

Starting cornerback Charvarius Ward is the latest injured 49er to return to the practice field, showing up for the media portion of practice Friday. “Mooney” has been dealing with a groin strain sustained in Week 6’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The injury pooped up early in the second quarter, keeping Ward on the sideline for the duration of the half before he was ruled out altogether.

Unable to practice Wednesday and Thursday, his return Friday bodes well for his chances of playing Sunday afternoon.

Ward, 26, signed with the 49ers in the offseason, inking a three-year, $42 million deal to come over to the West Coast. He hopes to return this weekend against his former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, helping his new team with the inside scoop on their operations.

“All the little tips and tricks,” Fred Warner said with a chuckle Thursday. “I know he’s really excited for the matchup, obviously facing your former team you got a little extra incentive. But we’ll keep the tips and tricks on the low.”

Joining Ward Friday is safety Talanoa Hufanga, sporting a non-contact blue jersey in practice. “Huff” is still in concussion protocol after sustaining a head injury in the first quarter of Week 6. The safety was able to finish the game, passing both in-game and postgame tests to clear him initially. The third and final test the following day found that Hufanga showed lingering symptoms Monday, placing him in the protocol.

Practicing for a second time this week is defensive ends Nick Bosa (groin) and Samson Ebukam (Achilles), left tackle Trent Williams (ankle), and right tackle Mike McGlinchey (calf). We’ll have to wait until head coach Kyle Shanahan’s game status report this afternoon for their official designations.
