For the first time since Forbes started valuing NBA teams over 20 years ago, a team outside of Los Angeles and New York takes the top spot.
Forbes released its annual valuation of basketball teams Thursday, with the Golden State Warriors taking the top spot. The defending NBA champions are believed to be worth $7 billion, an increase of 25% from last year.
During the 2021-22 season, the Warriors generated the most revenue ($765 million after paying their revenue-sharing check) and the most operating income ($206 million) in NBA history as they won their fourth title in eight years and played their first full season with fans in the new Chase Center.
The top five most valuable teams after the Golden State Warriors include the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, and Boston Celtics.
Forbes believes the NBA is back to its pre-COVID trajectory, with the average team now worth $2.86 billion, a 15% increase from a year ago.
Where do the Sacramento Kings rank? Vivek Ranadivé’s team ranked 18th, being valued at $2.03 billion. In the past two years, the Kings’ value has grown 12%.
Could the team’s value increase next year if the Kings make it into the play-in tournament or even the playoffs? We’ll find out in 2023.
Led by the eye-popping $7 billion Golden State Warriors, the average NBA team is now worth $2.86 billion, 15% more than a year ago, an impressive feat considering the stock market is down more than 15% over the same span. https://t.co/7GVeM7zLxU
