The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in a similar spot from last season: 3-4 after the first seven weeks of the year. The only difference between the two is that they won going into Week 8 last season, defeating the Bears, 33-22.

This season they find themselves on the backend of an embarrassing defeat at home to the Kansas City Chiefs, 44-23, heading into Week 8.

While the two seasons are eerily similar, the tone in the locker room is different according to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, a sense of urgency has risen from the ashes of defeat.

“I’m not gonna say we’ve been in this exact situation because every year is different. But we’ve been in difficult spots before and I think what’s gotten us out of it in the past is just coming together as a team, being together and having that sense of urgency that ‘we need to fix it, We need to fix it now,'” Garoppolo said to the media Thursday.

He’s right, the 49ers have been in difficult spots before and managed to crawl out them miraculously. Just last season they took a 3-4 team and rallied to the NFC Championship game. All it takes is a group effort and a little sense of urgency.

“So it’s one of those things that, whatever the offseason was, we need to get to where we need to get more quickly and just with a sense of urgency. I think that’s the biggest thing and I think you feel it in the locker room. I felt that throughout the week honestly, just there’s a sense of urgency with the guys. I mean, we got to do this together. There’s no “I”, no individual is going to do it on his own. We got to do this as a team and I think this is what has made us great in the past,” the quarterback explained.

A lot of the blame for the poor start is focused on the offense, stalling out in the second half repeatedly this season. In the team’s four losses so far, the 49ers have soared a total of 16 points in the second half. That simply can’t happen if they want to contend this season.

And Jimmy G knows it, stating that the team has to stay on the field longer in order to execute winning drives.

“I think it’s a combination of things,” Garoppolo stated. “But you just have to execute plays. It’s about making plays out there, staying on the field on third down, being able to run the ball. I think all those things play a key [role].

Luckily, help is on the way in the form of All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, getting a full week of practice in before his second matchup of the year against the Los Angeles Rams. Only featured in a handful of plays against the Chiefs, coach Kyle Shanahan noted that the full playbook would be at his disposal going forward.

Now it’s just up to Garoppolo and “CMC” to get on the same page fast.

“We’re trying to get as much time together, just talking, trying to get on same page. He sees the field very similar to a quarterback. He has a good feel for space,” Garoppolo said. “When you can feel that zone and space in there, it’s always a nice thing.”
