Dusty Baker has finally won the big one as an MLB manager.

Sacramento native Dusty Baker led the Houston Astros to a World Series championship Saturday night with a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in game 6.

Baker previously appeared in the World Series as a manager with the San Francisco Giants in 2002. At 73 years old, he is the oldest manager to win a World Series championship.

Baker was close last year, too, as his Astros met the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. But the Braves outlasted the Astros 4-2 to take home the title. Things looked like they could repeat this year when the Phillies took a two-game lead in the series, but Philadelphia would not win another after Tuesday. Pitching stepped up for Houston over the last three games, holding the Phillies to only two runs scored.

This is Houston’s first World Series victory since its controversial win in 2017 when the team was found to have stolen signs. Baker joined the team in 2020 and has since led the team to three consecutive playoff appearances and two consecutive World Series appearances.

Dusty Baker and his family moved to the Sacramento area when he was in his teens. In 2010, Baker was inducted into the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Hall of Fame because he was a stand-out athlete at Del Campo High School. Baker still has ties in the Sacramento region. The Baker Family Wines is located in West Sacramento.
