After a week off, the San Francisco 49ers look to start their second half of the 2022 regular season on the right track. Monday morning provided the first step for the team, opening up the practice window for running back Elijah Mitchell to come off the injured reserve.

Mitchell, 26, has been on the IR list since suffering an MCL sprain Week 1 against the Chicago Bears. He sustained the injury during the second quarter of Week 1, getting wrapped up awkwardly before falling on his knee. Before that, Mitchell was on his way to a great opening game, rushing six times for 41 yards.

San Francisco also got back back linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair (MCL) and offensive tackle Colton McKivitz (knee) Monday from the IR, activating their 21-day practice window. Al-Shaair sustained his injury Week 3 against the Denver Broncos, while McKivitz has also been dealing with a knee injury that has sidelined him for most of the 2022 season.

Mitchell had been expected to return to the field after the team’s bye week, excited as ever to re-join the 49ers explosive backfield.

“I’m excited,” Elijah Mitchell told NBC Sports Bay Area last week. “I’m just excited to come in and help out even more. It’s going to be awesome.”

Also taking the field Monday was fullback Kyle Juszczyk, wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings, and cornerback Jason Verrett. All four players didn’t feature Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams, but appear on track to play Week 10 against the LA Chargers.

The 49ers also signed WR Tajae Sharpe to the team’s practice squad Monday, releasing tight end Troy Fumagalli to make room.
