Brutal news to open the day for the 49ers. Cornerback Jason Verrett suffered a torn Achilles tendon at practice Wednesday, the team announced, effectively ending his season before it even started.

Verrett, 31, has spent the first half of the 2022 season on PUP list, recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week 1 of the previous season. He had been making steady progress over the last month or so, starting to lead the secondary group in drills this week. Activated off the PUP list prior to the team’s bye week, JV had been preparing to make his season debut this week against his former team, the Los Angeles Chargers.

The injury occurred during the closed portion of practice Wednesday, sustaining the tear to his left leg. Verrett had surgery to repair his right ACL a little more than a year ago. Now facing yet another setback, his return to the field will be prolonged even more.

A Fairfield native, Jason Verrett has struggled to stay on the field during his career, only playing 18 games since 2016. When healthy he is as effective as they come, producing 60 tackles, two interceptions and seven pass breakups in 2020 for the Red & Gold.

In total, San Francisco has suffered 15 injuries to starting players that has either sidelined for one game, or the season altogether. While he wasn’t expecting to man the second starting spot on his own, Verrett’s injury casts a large shadow over a team looking to get fully healthy for the stretch run of the regular season.

A defense already without CB Emmanuel Moseley (torn ACL), the 49ers will have to rely on their young cast of secondary members to shore up the position.
